Social Justice Tribunals Ontario (SJTO) is committed to treating all people with dignity and respect and in a manner that promotes independence.
SJTO is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible environment in which all members of the public have equitable access to our services. We will meet our obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and will aim to do so in a timely manner.
SJTO is committed to providing accommodation for needs in accordance with the principles of the Human Rights Codeand related to:
SJTO will report annually on our multi-year accessibility and accommodation, and diversity plans. The reports will be posted on our public website and will be made available in an accessible format on request.
SJTO is committed to providing excellent customer service to all parties, representatives, witnesses, and other members of the public who seek to use our services. We will provide equitable access for all people to ensure that they are able to fully participate in our processes.
The following principles will guide SJTO in making its processes accessible:
SJTO will ensure that our staff are familiar with various assistive devices that we have on site or that we provide, that may be used by clients with disabilities.
SJTO will communicate with people with disabilities in ways that take into account their particular needs.
SJTO welcomes people with disabilities and their service animals. Service animals are allowed in areas of our offices that are open to the public.
SJTO welcomes support persons accompanying clients with a disability.
SJTO has staff at each of our tribunals who are fully informed of this policy and will receive and respond to inquiries and requests for accessibility and/or accommodation. If you require accommodation at one of our tribunals, contact the tribunal by clicking on the appropriate link below.
Each tribunal will keep a record of all accommodation requests and action taken. SJTO will monitor performance at all of our tribunals on an ongoing basis.
SJTO will notify clients if there is a disruption at one of our offices or in services usually used by people with disabilities. We will explain the reason for the disruption, how long it will last and if alternative facilities or services are available. We may not be able to give advance notice if it is an unplanned or emergency disruption.
SJTO will provide training to staff and members on:
Training will be provided in a way that best suits the duties of staff and members. SJTO will keep a record of all training provided, including the dates of the training and the number of individuals to whom training is provided.
SJTO welcomes feedback, including feedback about our services to people with disabilities. We will provide for feedback to be given in a variety of ways, including in person, by telephone, writing, or email. We will regularly review feedback received to look for ways to remove barriers to accessibility and improve our customer service.
SJTO will incorporate accessibility criteria and features when procuring, or acquiring goods, services or facilities. When we are unable to incorporate accessibility criteria and features into procurement, an explanation will be provided, upon request.
SJTO will provide information to and communicate with individuals in a way that takes into account their accessibility needs. When asked, we will provide information about SJTO and its services, including public safety information, in accessible formats or with communication supports. We will also meet internationally-recognized WCAG 2.0, Level A and AA website requirements in accordance with timelines set out in the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation, except where it is not practicable.
SJTO is committed to fair and accessible employment practices. We will notify our staff and the public that accommodation can be made during recruitment and hiring.
SJTO will notify staff that supports are available for those with disabilities. When SJTO is aware of an accommodation need due to disability, we will put in place a process to develop individual accommodation plans for those staff. Where needed, we will provide customized emergency information to help a staff person with a disability during an emergency.
SJTO's performance management, career development and redeployment processes will take into account the accessibility needs of our staff. Accessibility objectives will be included in yearly performance plans for managers and staff.
