Hearing Room

The hearing room is where the hearing takes place. In the hearing room, you can see different hearing room characters. Click on each to find out about their role at the hearing.

Oral hearings are generally scheduled for one and a half hours. We may, however, allow more time if one of the parties requires an interpreter, or if we have summoned a police officer or other witness, or if the alleged offender is participating.

At oral hearings, a panel of one or more board members assesses written materials submitted by the parties and oral evidence presented by witnesses. The panel may ask questions of the witnesses to assist in understanding the evidence, and will then determine whether or not an applicant qualifies for compensation, and if so, the amount of that compensation.
